How ESAFF Operates:
ESAFF is a farmer-led regional network working through national member organizations in 17 countries across Eastern and Southern Africa. Through these members, ESAFF amplifies the voices of over 5.5 million small-scale farmers, strengthens grassroots organizations, and advances farmer-led advocacy, agroecology, climate resilience, and policy engagement from local to regional levels.
Our members include: MVIWATA (Tanzania), KESSFF (Kenya), ESAFF Uganda, ESAFF Zambia, ESAFF Lesotho, ESAFF South Africa, NASFAM (Malawi), APPEE-ESAFF Rwanda, ESAFF Burundi, SeyFA (Seychelles), CPM (Madagascar), MMMR/ROSA (Mozambique), ESAFF Eswatini, FOPAC (DRC), SSAPU (South Sudan), ZIMSOFF (Zimbabwe), and BOFA (Botswana).
Together, we connect farmer voices, influence policy, and drive sustainable agricultural transformation across the region.
Organizational Structure
ESAFF is a member-driven regional network governed through democratic and participatory structures that ensure accountability, representation, and effective leadership across Eastern and Southern Africa.
Tri-Annual General Summit (TGS)
The TGS is ESAFF’s highest decision-making body and is convened every three years. It brings together four representatives from each member country to set the strategic direction of the organization, review progress, and elect regional leadership.
Annual General Meeting (AGM)
Held annually, the AGM provides a platform for member countries to review performance, approve plans and budgets, strengthen accountability, and make key organizational decisions. Each member country is represented by two delegates.
Regional Board
The Regional Board provides strategic oversight, policy guidance, and governance leadership for ESAFF. Board members are elected by the TGS and serve a three-year term, renewable once upon re-election. The Board ensures that the organization remains responsive to the priorities and aspirations of small-scale farmers across the region.
Regional Secretariat
Led by the Regional Coordinator, the Secretariat is responsible for the day-to-day management and implementation of ESAFF’s programmes, partnerships, advocacy initiatives, and operations. Guided by policies and decisions of the Regional Board, the Secretariat supports member organizations and drives the delivery of ESAFF’s mission and strategic objectives.
Together, these governance structures ensure that ESAFF remains farmer-led, accountable, and responsive to the needs of millions of small-scale farmers across Eastern and Southern Africa.
